TRIGGER TRANSFORMERS

In flashlamp applications a trigger coil is utilized to produce a high voltage pulse of short duration, usually a few microseconds or less to ignite the lamp. Vision Engineering, Amglo's subsidiary, manufactures two types of external transformers which create a thin ionized streamer between the anode and cathode within the lamp. The coupling of this voltage to the lamp can be achieved using a thin nickel wire wrap or a metal paint placed along the length of the lamp stripe. External transformers are small in size and most cost effective compared to series transformers. On advantage of series triggering is greater timing accuracy, which is required in some laser lamp applications. These triggers are typically large in size, since they not only generate the HV ignition but also must be able to withstand up to several thousand Amps of current.
